    Description

I tried to do the best I could to keep up with my stamp collecting while I was in the Navy.  So I joined the US Postal Commemorative Society.  Which was great and a no brainer, just pay my bill regularly and they did the rest.  One of the Unique presentation they came out with 45 years ago was the Authentic Black Penny stamp and presentation case.  When I finally got home to see it, I was delighted that the cancellation was very, very light- almost not noticeable.  Back in the 1800's the concept of cancellation was to totally obliterate the stamp so that it could never be used again - they were expensive and people got very creative - like cutting 2 stamps in half, and using 1/2 each that didn't so any cancellation, and then glue them on a letter.  So the postal worker used a over size leather stamp and as much ink as possible.   I have seen many other black penny stamps , and they were or almost unrecognizable.  This is a fine to V-Fine specimen, in a great presentation case, and history card.
Life's events as of the past 12 months are taking me in a new unforeseen direction and I am selling off all my best stamps.
