    "
    Surinam 14th April 1823
    My Dear Mrs Hayward,
It is with feelings of the most painful nature that I am now under the disagreeable necessity of informing you of the death of your good and worthy Mother which melancholy event took place on the 4th inst. after a very short illness of a few days- Her death was occasioned by a violent cold, with earache and sore throat followed by fever - as soon as I found her illness to appear alarming I immediately sent for a doctor to Fort Amsterdam, which was on Thursday afternoon, on his arrival he found your dear Mother very ill and went immediately back, where he sent medicine and two blister's, I gave the medicine every two hours according to the Doctors orders during the night, and the blisters were applied to the calves of her legs - Your Brother Peter arrived very early on Friday morning when finding my dear Maria in so dangerous a state had her conveyed to Town, where although every assistance was procured, and every attention paid to Her, she almost immediately expired in your Brothers house-
Your Brother Peter will shortly leave the Colony when he will bring your dear mothers Will and her clothes etc. with him - in the meantime condoling with you most sincerely for the heavy loss you have sustained as well as myself, I am with kind love to my Brother,
Dear Mrs Hayward, Your Sincere friend- I. Hayward.
One week after the death of my dear Wife, I received the melancholy tidings of the death of my dear Sister Mrs Beak, conveyed in a letter from your Husband and I most sincerely condole with Mr B and my Brothers on this event-."
